3. Belted frente a unbelted
- Sweep VHT Crusher: belted; Super-Soft rojo, Soft dorado, Medium blanco y Hard negro.
English: a tire is a system, not just a compound
Choosing an RC drag tire is not simply a matter of buying the softest option. Compound, carcass, reinforcement, insert and wheel work together. This report separates published manufacturer specifications from a proposed testing protocol. It is not a timed head-to-head test or a brand ranking.
No-prep terminology does not replace the track rulebook. Check your class rules for tire treatment, warmers, modifications and traction aids.
1. Hardness: Soft is not a universal measurement
Soft, Super Soft and Ultra Soft are commercial labels. Do not turn them into durometer numbers or cross-brand equivalencies without comparable measurements. The consulted sources do not provide a shared Shore hardness table that ranks all these tires.
Sweep VHT Crusher calls red Super-Soft and gold Soft; eXcelerate Gen2 calls red Soft and gold Medium. The same color does not mean the same compound. JConcepts also calls Hotties gold medium in parts of its description and soft in its option selector. Identify the exact model and code and clarify that inconsistency before purchasing.
2. Expansion: tire growth is not launch deformation
Distinguish radial growth at high rotational speed, or ballooning, from carcass deformation during launch. For an ideal rolling wheel without slip, distance per revolution equals π × diameter. A change in effective diameter changes that relationship. Real-world slip and deformation prevent that formula alone from predicting actual vehicle speed.
We do not assign expansion percentages: those need controlled tests using the same wheel, insert, temperature and rotational speed. JConcepts provides a qualitative Hotties distinction: green for greater expansion and cooler conditions, gold for less expansion and warmer conditions. That does not establish which option is always faster.
3. Belted versus unbelted
An internal belt is intended to limit carcass growth. It does not make a tire rigid or indestructible. Molded rubber ribs are not a belt, as JConcepts explicitly explains for Hotties. Raw Speed labels its Slick SCT / No-Prep tire unbelted; eXcelerate Gen2 specifies a reinforced Kevlar belt.
Sweep warns against unloaded table or hand revving and against allowing a tire to spin freely while other tires are stopped. Excessive rotational speed can damage the belt. Do not use unloaded revving as an expansion test. Observe model-specific restrictions: JConcepts rates Hotties for Street Eliminator 2S only.
4. Inserts support the carcass
Insert dimensions and application matter. JConcepts includes Dirt-Tech closed-cell inserts with Hotties; Raw Speed includes closed-cell inserts with its Slick SCT / No-Prep tire. The Sweep VHT Crusher Soft listing says inserts are sold separately.
On DragRace Concepts' official store, eXcelerate Gen2 recommends 1.500-inch inserts for narrow wheels and 1.75-inch inserts for wide wheels. Pro Foam 2-Stage is a separate product with a published 1.600-inch width: Purple core for High Bite, Red HR for Super High Bite, and Black HR for Prep Track / Dry Tire. Do not substitute one recommendation for another without confirming the complete assembly. Its reduced-wadding explanation is a manufacturer claim, not an HmsProTech test result.
5. Documented model comparison
- JConcepts Hotties SCT Rear, 3194: 2.2 × 3.0-inch bead; unbelted rubber-rib reinforcement; Dirt-Tech inserts; Street Eliminator 2S limit. Do not apply these specifications to other JConcepts tires.
- Pro-Line Reaction+ HP Wide S3, PRO10188203: listed as belted, rear 2.2/3.0-inch, with two soft foam inserts. Durometer values and expansion measurements could not be verified on the consulted page. S3 is not equated with another compound here.
- Sweep VHT Crusher: belted; red Super-Soft, gold Soft, white Medium and black Hard. The Soft listing describes stickier surfaces with firmer sidewalls. No numerical cross-brand ranking is provided.
- Raw Speed Slick SCT / No-Prep, SKU 100501: unbelted, 2.2 × 3.0-inch bead, closed-cell inserts. Options include green Super Soft, yellow Soft, Long Wear versions, Gumball, Clay and MCLovin. Names alone do not establish measured hardness or performance.
- eXcelerate Gen2, XCE-0001, sold by DragRace Concepts: equal sidewall design, Kevlar belt, red Soft and gold Medium. These are this model's specifications, not those of previous DragRace Concepts generations.
- Powerhobby Wildcat Belted: the HmsProOutletParts listing describes 1/10-scale rear no-prep slicks with a Weave Pattern Belt, 2.2/3.0-inch wheel compatibility and two tires with soft foam inserts. Wheels and tire glue are required. Its description lists 4.15 inches (105 mm) in height and 1.80 inches (46 mm) in width, but mixes Soft and Ultra Soft labels and does not identify each XL variant's measurements. Those dimensions are therefore not treated as universal. Catalog options are Soft, XL soft, XL Ultra Soft and Ultra soft; XL is not a measured hardness. The no-expansion statement is commercial listing text, not an independent test. No Shore values, guaranteed zero expansion, speed limits or compound equivalencies are assigned. The supplied product name and identifiers establish Powerhobby 1/10 Wildcat XL Wide BELTED Rear 2.2/3.0 Drag Racing Tires ULTRA SOFT as SKU PHT3013-U, barcode 655479031965. This identifies XL Ultra Soft, not standard Ultra soft or XL soft. Its specific dimensions and the other variants' identifiers still require confirmation.
- Team Ottsix Racing Voodoo Absolute Zero V2: according to the model information supplied to HmsProTech, the package contains two 3.0-inch Equal Sidewall drag racing tires. Compounds: Red = Soft; Gold = Medium; Silver = Firm. These are model-specific labels, not Shore measurements or cross-brand equivalencies. No expansion percentages, power limits or temperature recommendations are assigned without further documentation. Specifications from another Absolute Zero version are not transferred to the V2.
6. Preparation is not one-size-fits-all
Do not transfer warming times or chemical treatments between brands. Follow the tire and preparation-product manufacturers' instructions and the rulebook. This guide does not prescribe homemade mixtures, universal temperatures or prolonged burnouts. Inspect glue joints, wheels and carcasses before each session; stop using damaged tires.
7. HmsProTech's proposed track-test protocol
Record tire model, compound, insert, wheel, permitted preparation, track temperature, battery, gearing and ESC settings. Keep those factors constant during comparisons and change one variable at a time.
Make several controlled passes and record elapsed time, early split time if timing equipment is available, finishing speed, wheelspin and stability. Compare consistency rather than only the quickest pass. Note any change in track grip between tests. Video recorded from a protected position can help assess launches, but it does not replace diameter or hardness measurement.
Conclusion
This research does not establish a universal winner. Start with compatibility and class rules, then compound, carcass and insert, and finally repeatable tests. Explore our Powerhobby Wildcat listing and check the selected variant and availability before buying. Commercial availability is not proof of technical superiority.
